From late July 2026, our main auditorium will temporarily close for major improvements that will elevate your theatre experience.
These upgrades are designed to ensure Glen Street Theatre continues to serve our community for many years to come. You can look forward to:
• Enhanced comfort with brand-new seating
• Improved accessibility
• A state-of-the-art sound system
While the auditorium is being transformed, the rest of the building will remain open. Be sure to check our monthly e-news for updates and to see What’s On during this time.
We will keep you updated as these improvements unfold!
FAQ - Glen Street Theatre Auditorium Renewal
Why will the Theatre be closed?
- As part of ongoing asset maintenance, the Glen Street Theatre auditorium will undergo a refurbishment in 2026. This is part of standard asset lifecycle maintenance.
- These upgrades will improve accessibility, acoustics and audience comfort. A key part of the works includes replacing the seats, which have reached the end of their usable life.
How long will the main auditorium be closed?
- The main auditorium will be closed from late July to early September. We are currently working with the project management team to finalise the overall program of works and schedule.
Will all of Glen Street Theatre be closed?
- No. Works will only occur in the main auditorium. The rest of the venue will remain open, and we encourage patrons to stay up to date with What’s On via our website or by signing up for our e-news.
Is this work being funded by the Special Variation to rates?
- No, this project is funded through capital works program budgets within Council’s Long-Term Financial Plan and is part of Council’s regular planned asset maintenance.
Will the seating plan be changed?
- No. These works are a refurbishment only. The auditorium is not being rebuilt, and we will be working within the existing structure of the venue. The layout of the walls, floors steps, doors and ceiling will remain unchanged.
- We are currently working with the seating supplier on final plans and do not anticipate significant changes to the current layout.
- An additional handrail in the centre stairways is not achievable within the current building structure. This area is an emergency egress and is not wide enough to accommodate a handrail without a significant reduction in seating capacity.
Are you removing the current seat plaques in the Theatre?
- Yes.
- Seat plaques are an important part of the building’s nearly 40-year history. Glen Street Theatre acknowledges the significant contribution of individuals, groups, and businesses who have made a seat dedication. This support has played a vital role in creating the wonderful arts centre we have today.
- To improve audience, comfort the existing seats will be replaced with new seats. Existing seat plaques will be removed and will not be reinstalled. These plaques will be preserved as part of honouring the Theatre’s heritage
- Those with an existing seat dedication will be contacted by our team once preservation plans are finalised. We anticipate this will be early 2026.
